The Women Student's Hostel was started by the Government of Maharashtra on 4th June, 1952, to accommodate undergraduate girl students studying in colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai.

On January 3, 1981 the Women Student's Hostel was renamed as Savitridevi Phule Mahila Chhatralaya to honour the memory of - Savitridevi Phule, a pioneer in the education of women. The hostel is situated in the beautiful location of Marine Drive facing the Arabian Sea.

The hostel accomodates a large student community of 450 girls studying in different colleges and institutes of Mumbai .The hostel provides good accommodation facilities which include Mess, Recreation Hall, Visitor Hall, Phone and Xerox etc.

The Telang Smarak Hostel located in Churchgate, formerly for boys was converted (transferred) to girls hostel on 22nd July, 2002.
ADMISSSION RULES
1.
Students (Girl students) of the colleges and institutions affiliated to the Mumbai University and J.J. Schools of Arts will be eligible for admission to Savitridevi Phule Mahila Chatralaya, Charni Road, Mumbai and Telang Smarak Girls Hostel, Churchgate,Mumbai. Students of other educational institutions will also be admitted depending on special circumstances and the number of vacant seats available.
(a)
Applications of students mainly engaged in studies but doing part-time work with a view to supplementing their income may be considered for admission. However, students doing part-time course will not be considered for admission.
(b)
Applications from Medical students and other students doing Professional courses such as Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dental Courses etc; will not ordinarily be considered for admission.
(c)
Applications from students whose parents and homes are in Mumbai will not ordinarily be considered for admission.
2. Preference for admission will be given to students in the following order :
(a) Undergraduate students already residing in the Hostel.
(b) Undergraduate fresh applicants.
(c) Post-graduate students.
(d) EBC Students.
3. No student shall be allowed to stay in the Hostel for more than 5 academic years under ordinary circumstances.
4.
A resident student who fails in or fails to appear at an examination or obtain A.T.K.T. in the examination, is liable to lose her seat in the Hostel.

(a)
All applications for rooms should send their applications in the prescribed form (costing Rs. 50/-) along with an advance rent deposit of Rs. 100/- which will be deducted from the term rent if the applicant gets admission or refunded if she does not get admission. The amount will be forfeited if the applicant does not occupy the allotted room within the week from the date of allotment of the room.
(b)
Applicant must submit to the Superintendent of the Hostel a bonafide certificate duly signed by the Principal of her College before the commencement of the term.

All applicants should reach the Superintendent of the Hostel between 15th May and 31st May or one week after the declaration of results, whichever is latter.
Applications received after the dates may not be considered.
6.
In case of withdrawal of application, if a written application being made by the student before the commencement of the term the advance rent deposit may be refunded in full, in other case it will be forfeited.
7.
If the occupant of a room does not reside in the Hostel for 15 days continuously without permission of the Superintendent of the hostel then her room is liable to be held vacant.
8.
Any occupant who is found to have willfully made a false statement in her application for a room shall be required to vacate the room and forfeit her deposit.
9. Student who fails to secure admission to college is also required to vacate the room.
10.
Admission Committee will take interview of the applicants and the selected candidates will be admitted after the approval of the Government.
11.
70% admission will be given to girls who are staying in Maharashtra for last 15 years and who have passed the 10th and 12th exam; of the Maharashtra State Secondary & Higher Secondary Education Board.
12. 20% seats will be given for other State and Foreign Students.
13.
10% seats will be given towards of Central State Government Officers on transfer as well as for wards of Service men.
14.
Students should abide strictly the Mess Rules, Rules regarding Discipline and visitors; issued by the Superintendent of Hostel.
15. Fee Structure:
(a) First Term 20th June to 30th November
Second Term 1st Dec to 30th April
(b) The fee structure for each term is as follows:

4.Caution Money (for new comers) 100.00
5. Student Fund 50.00
6. Medical Charges 50.00
TOTAL 2750.00
The last day of the second term is either 30th April or day on which the exam gets over, whichever is earlier.
(c)
If the date of the examination of the Student is after 30th of April then Rs. 20/- will be charged per day upto 30th of May.
(d)
The student can stay in the hostel for 3 days without paying any money after the last day of their examination. Thereafter they can stay for 8 more days by paying Rs.50/- per day. However, they will not be permitted to stay in the hostel after that under any circumstances.
(e)
The fee structure given above is applicable to the wards of those parents whose income is Rs. 1,00,000/- (one lakh)or less per annum.

For Backward Class / Other Backward Class and Economically Backward Class the room rent will be Rs. 750/- other charges remain the same.
(f) For Foreign Students the room rent will be Rs.3000/-. The other charges remain the same.
