The College
The Government Law College was established in 1855 and gained affiliation to the University of Bombay on 4 September 1860. This pioneering institute has succeeded in carving a niche for itself in the Indian legal context as also in the context of legal education. The Government Law College has played an immeasurably important role in the judicial, political, social and historical background of India.
The Law Review
The Law Review is an annual publication of the Government Law College. All the articles published in The Law Review are written by the students of the college. The Committee, along with members of the Editorial Board, decides upon the articles that are to be published in each volume of The Law Review. At the outset, prospective authors are given an orientation as to the various aspects of writing a legal article and the main emphasis is on the selection of a subject that lends itself to effective analysis and discussion.. The articles are thus, products of extensive research and analysis, both by the authors and the committee members. The publication contains articles on subjects that are topical and pertinent to the legal field as well as those of interest to both students and legal professionals At the same time, The Law Review aims to establish a symbiotic relationship between prospective authors and Committee members by facilitating a structure where members' editorial skills are aided through analysing the drafts of various articles, interaction with authors and both developing as well as ensuring compliance with the guidelines laid down for specifications of law review articles.
It is imperative in today's world that legislation runs parallel with the demands of a constantly changing world and developing society. Law students today thus have a challenging task in terms of not only assimilating and analysing the implications of developing laws but also of reviewing the changing applicability and relevance of established laws in contemporary times. The Law Review provides students with an opportunity to explore in depth the broad spectrum of legal knowledge and a platform to express their own analysis. The Law Review hopes that attempts at incisive research by young student authors coupled with a fresh perspective would go a long way in initiating and sustaining law reform in the years to come.
The Law Review Committee
The main task undertaken by the Faculty Advisor and the members of the Law Review Committee is that of the selection of the articles to be published in The Law Review. The Law Review Committee evaluates articles submitted for publication and the approved articles, where necessary, are restructured, their contents analysed and the main issues discussed in depth by the committee and the authors. The entire process of is very meticulous and the articles before being finally passed are made to comply with the stringent specifications laid down by the committee. Generally, a few committee members are assigned to work along with the author at the outset and this group then works upon the prospective article. This interactive process of research, analysis and subsequently discussion, is a delightful learning experience for both, the committee members and the student authors.
The Editorial Board
The Editorial Board of The Law Review consists of some of the most distinguished legal luminaries in the country, headed by Former Chief Justice of India, Mr. Justice Y.V. Chandrachud. The Editorial Board comprises of counsels and lawyers who are experts in their own fields. The articles shortlisted by the Law Review Committee are sent to the members of the editorial board according to the area of their expertise. The members of the Editorial Board assure that the articles are legally sound and carry contemporary views on the issues at hand. Changes, comments and suggestions of the editors are incorporated The Editorial Board of esteemed legal luminaries ensures the high standard of this publication.
The Contributors
Over the years, the Government Law College has been fortunate to receive unconditional and wholehearted support in all its endeavours from judges and lawyers, amongst others. The Law Review is a free publication, distributed among students, eminent lawyers, several law firms, judges of the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court, and universities, both, in India, as well as abroad. This has been made possible thanks to the enthusiastic response from law firms and counsels alike who have generously and unhesitatingly assisted financially towards the publication of The Law Review.
