The Moot Court Association (MCA) of Government Law College was inaugurated in February 1955 by the then Hon'ble Education Minister, Mr. Dinkar R. Desai, under the aegis of Principal Mr. K. R. Mehta.
The concept of a 'moot court' is a universal co-curricular activity that is pursued and recognized by law colleges worldwide. In recognition of
Mooting as an imperative co- curricular activity, the members of the Moot Court Association work unstintingly to promote and encourage mooting in Government Law College. The College has one of the most effective and dynamic Moot Court Associations.
In pursuance of its primary objective-
to promote and encourage the activity of Mooting in Government Law College, the Moot Court Association singularly co-ordinates all the mooting activities at Government Law College.
This vibrant students' association hosts the following Competitions throughout the year:
The Demonstration Moot Court
The Moot Court Association commences its activities every academic year with the Demonstration Moot Court. This moot is held in order to acquaint the Freshers with the process of Mooting. As per tradition, this Moot is judged by a panel of judges which comprises of ex-students who have been established Mooters and two experienced mooters of the final year participate in this moot.
Fresher's Moot Court Competition
The Fresher's Moot Court Competition is the first intra-college moot court competition that the MCA organizes. As the names suggests the participants of this Moot are primarily students of the first year. The competition consists of three rounds of Arguments- the Preliminary Rounds, the Semi-final Rounds and the Final Round which is conducted in the college Auditorium. The Finals are judged by two Senior Professors and the Chairman of the Moot Court Association. Since the past few years this competition has seen enthusiastic participation from the Freshers who have shown a keen interest in mooting.
In order to encourage and familiarize the students with various aspects of mooting the MCA organizes several workshops to prepare them for the Fresher's Moot Court Competition. These workshops are conducted by the students of the fourth and fifth year who are accomplished mooters of college. These workshops have proved to be an overwhelming success as they have greatly benefitted the students.
The Grand Moot Court Competition
The Grand Moot Court Competition is the most important Intra-college Moot Court Competition in Government Law College. The students are segregated into groups on the basis of their classes and the winners of each group then go on to compete in the Ranking Round. In this round the students are ranked according to their performance and can then choose the International, National, State and City Level Moot Court Competitions that they wish to participate in. Besides the Grand Moot Court Competition, the MCA conducts a number of eliminations in order to choose students to represent college in various moot court competitions. The Mooters of GLC have done us proud repeatedly by winning the top hounors at the most prestigious moots throughout the country.
The D.M. Harish Memorial Government Law College International Moot Court Competition
India's first, largest and most prestigious international moot court competition in hosted by the MCA in association with the D. M. Harish Foundation. The competition is organized in memory of Late Mr. D. M. Harish an eminent authority on Tax Law and an alumnus of Government Law College. The competition has over the years given an opportunity to law students to develop their plenary skills in the area of advocacy. We have realized the importance of International Law in the contemporary world and therefore it has been our effort to concentrate the quiddity of the problem on the subject of Public International Law. Since its inception the competition has seen a steady increase in the number of International entrants. The 2008 edition of the competition saw as many as 11 International teams from various Universities/ Colleges in the United States of America, United Kingdom, Ireland, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Greece, Bangladesh, Spain and Australia participate in the competition making it a truly global experience. The competition is judged by experts on International Law and Advocates and Senior Advocates of the Bombay High Court. The Finals Rounds are conducted at the Mumbai University Convocation Hall and presided over by 5 sitting judges of the Bombay High Court.
The competition will be held from 13th - 15th February, 2009
The Nani Palkhivala Memorial National Tax Moot Court Competition
India's first and only moot court competition devoted exclusively to the subject of Tax Law. The competition is hosted by the MCA in association with the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Bar Association and the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners (AIFTP). This competition gives the students a unique opportunity to argue in the ITAT Courtrooms before the Hon'ble members of the ITAT. The Final Rounds of the competition are adjudged by three sitting Judges of the Bombay High Court.
The competition will be held from 16th - 18th October, 2008.
The Late Chief Justice M. C. Chagla Memorial State Moot Court Competition
The Moot Court Association has been hosting the M. C. Chagla Memorial City-Level Moot Court Competition for the past eight years. Owing to the overwhelming response we have received from law colleges across Mumbai the competition will now be opened to law colleges from across the state of Maharashtra. This venerated Moot Court Competition is organized in memory of Late Mr. M. C. Chagla, the first Indian Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and a Professor of Constitutional Law at the Government Law College. The Government Law College is pleased to announce the M. C. Chagla Memorial Government Law College State Moot Court Competition to be held on
23rd & 24th January, 2009.
The Government Law College State Marathi Moot Court Competition
The Moot Court Association of Government Law College has been hosting the 'Government Law College City-Level Marathi Moot Court Competition' for the past 6 years. The overwhelming participation from students and with a view to promote the Marathi language the Moot Court Association thought it befitting to take the competition to the next level and organize the competition at the State Level. This competition enjoys the distinction of being the only moot court competition in the country conducted in a regional language - Marathi.
The competition will be conducted on 27th & 28th February, 2009.
Sir Jamshedji Kanga City -Level Moot Court Competition
This Moot is hosted by the MCA in association with the Rotary Club of Mumbai in memory of the Late Sir Jamshedji Kanga- an eminent Jurist.
The competition will be held on 5th & 6th March, 2010
